Roof Color FAQ (Southeast)
What is the most popular shingle color in the Southeast?
Weathered Wood and Charcoal/Black are the two most installed families. Weathered Wood pairs with brick and warm siding; Charcoal/Black maximizes contrast and hides valleys well.
Is there a difference between “Pewter Gray” and “Pewter”?
Yes—naming varies by brand. GAF uses Pewter Gray; Atlas/IKO often use Pewter. Both are mid-grays; sample boards show subtle differences in warmth and speckle.
Weathered Wood vs. Driftwood—how do I choose?
Weathered Wood leans brown/earthy; Driftwood trends cooler gray. Match to gutter, brick, and fascia colors; view both in sun and shade.
Do “cool” shingles really reduce attic temps?
Cool-rated colors (e.g., Atlas Pinnacle Sun/Cool) reflect more solar energy. Expect a modest improvement; combined with proper ventilation, you’ll see the best results.
What are the common PVDF metal roof colors in our region?
Charcoal, Matte Black, Burnished Slate, Galvalume Plus, Hartford Green, Roman/Gallery Blue, and Saddle/Light Stone are widely stocked in AL/GA.
Popular Shingle Lines We’re Asked About
This page helps homeowners compare color families across common product lines in the Auburn–Opelika market.
GAF
- Timberline HDZ® (architectural/dimensional; the best-selling shingle in North America)
- Royal Sovereign (3-tab; long-standing economy line)
- Note: GAF also produces premium “designer” lines (Grand Canyon, Slateline, etc.), but most homeowners compare Timberline HDZ and Royal Sovereign first when shopping Opelika-Auburn roofing.
IKO
- Cambridge (architectural/dimensional)
- Dynasty (architectural; larger nailing zone)
- Marathon Plus AR (3-tab)
Atlas
- Pinnacle Pristine (architectural; Scotchgard algae protection)
- StormMaster Shake / StormMaster Slate (polymer-modified architectural)
- Note: We haven’t found a current Atlas 3-tab line. Past names included “GlassMaster” / “ToughGlass,” but they appear to be discontinued in many markets.
Owens Corning
- Duration family (architectural)
- Supreme (3-tab)
CertainTeed
- Landmark (architectural)
- XT25 / CT20 (3-tab)
Tamko
- Heritage (architectural)
- Elite Glass-Seal (3-tab)
Malarkey
- Vista / Highlander AR (architectural)
- Legacy (architectural; SBS-modified)
- Windsor (premium thick-profile—similar “high-relief” aesthetic to GAF Grand Canyon-style designer looks)
If you’re trying to match a specific line or color (e.g., “Cambridge Dual Black,” “Dynasty Glacier,” “Landmark Weathered Wood”), call us and we’ll bring real samples so you can verify tones on your roof, in your light.
Color Comparisons People Ask For (Southeast)
Across Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle, homeowners often search for color match-ups before they call a roofer. If you’re comparing any of the pairs below, you’re in the right place:
- Charcoal vs Pewter (Gray family) – Charcoal is the darkest, Pewter/Pewter Gray is a softer mid-gray.
- Weathered Wood vs Driftwood (Brown/Gray blend) – Weathered Wood skews browner; Driftwood has cooler gray notes.
- Black Shadow / Dual Black vs Onyx/Moire Black – Brand names for “black” vary; undertones (warm/cool) differ slightly.
- Hunter/Forest Green vs Hartford Green – Metal and shingle greens vary by sheen; always compare in sunlight and shade.
Use the big table below to scan brand lines and see which manufacturers carry the color family you want.
